Dynamic Images (new Email Composer)

  • Updated

Add a dynamic image to personalize messages such as showing different offers or information to contacts, lists, or segments based on their profile attributes. For example, images you specify are displayed in individual contact's emails.

  1. Select or create any Act-On Contacts Segment or a Marketing List (Form submission list, etc.) with an 'image URL' field column (for example, named "imageurl") that contains the URLs of the images you want to use.
One way to do this for an existing Marketing List is to create an extension list & define an Extended List containing an image URL field column. This is explained in Manage Extended Lists.
  2. Open the email design you want (see Email Composer User Guide).
  3. In the Design tab, add an image block from the Content tab on the right.
  4. Click Browse:

  1. In the Select image dialog, click the down arrow at the top right & select Add dynamic image:

  1. In Dynamic image location, click Select & choose the list or segment from Step 1 above that contains the image URL field column.
If you created an Extended List, it's available nested under the Marketing List:

  1. Click Next & then select the field column for the images, for example, "imageurl":

If you selected an Extended List, the field column has a prefix, "join" in this example:

  1. Click Submit.
  2. In Fallback image, select an image to use if there is no dynamic image found (i.e. the image URL field is blank for that contact).
The fallback image is displayed in the email's design view.
  3. Click Insert.

Now the image in the email depends on which recipient the email is being sent to.

Preview Dynamic Images

Preview your dynamic images for each recipient in Preview Mode.

  1. Make sure the recipients selected are the same as those selected for the dynamic image:
    • In the new Email Composer, go to Send Details > RecipientsSelect contacts.
    • Choose the list, segment, or Extended List you selected in step 8 above (containing the image URL field column).
  2. At the top right of the Email Composer, click Preview.
  3. In the Details tab, toggle on Preview personalization.
  4. Use the arrows to select different recipients to see the dynamic image for each:

You can also check personalization for errors before sending the email.
If the image URL is not a valid image reference, a broken image icon is shown for that recipient. The fallback image is shown if the image URL field is blank.
