Query Logic Resources

Cindy Schifano
Hello!

Can anyone recommend a good resource to better understand building queries (logic, etc.)?

I learn (and retain) this type of information better when I have a reference.

Thanks!
Cindy

    Hi Gina,

Yes - for withing Act-On and building segments. I should have been more specific - thanks for asking! I should have been more specific. I've done some online searches, but then it gets into other aspects and I end up (more) confused.

Act-On's segment builder seems pretty intuitive. Have you read their help file for creating segments in their documentation yet?

    https://university.act-on.com/Product_Features/Contacts/Lists_-_Append_and_Segment/Creating_a_Segment

While not very complex, using AND and OR statements is not always intuitive, but the item Gina referenced is the best description within Act-On.

Not sure if it helps but it may be better to think about it as filtering items in or out of your list.

The best thing to do is try something simple, like creating a segment based on one thing. Perhaps all contacts from a City, or who have email addresses, etc. Then work out how to create a segment where both must be found so City AND email address is not empty, then try where either of two things can be used City A OR City B.

It won't hurt if you create a bunch of segments that aren't going to be actively used and you can always delete them after.

If you want to test, use some internal contacts and set them up with different parameters. Then work out who should get the emails based on your criteria - you can send directly from the segment.

    Cheers
    Paul

    Hi everyone,

While talking about segment creation, something to be aware of is that the record creation date and the record last changed date (found under System in the segment builder) only pertains to when the record was created or updated for that specific list. It is not a global value. So, if you are using either of those please be aware of that little factoid. Everything else is global though, I believe. I know all the behavior options are global and not list specific.

    Happy Friday,

    Hi Michelle,

thanks for your reply - I am basing my queries on profile - we are not using behavior yet - but I will be sure to keep this in mind.

    thanks!
