Act-On Cookies info

Noe Marti
Hi there,

We would need to know the following regarding Act-On cookies:

  1. Purpose

  2. Type of cookie: Are they persistent or session based?

  3. - Duration: How long does it remain before its automatically deleted?

It would be greatly appreciated to get these answered ASAP.

Thanks!
Noe

    Hi Noe, has anyone at Act On gotten back to you on this? I'm looking for the same information and I'm frankly shocked it cannot be found. Act On tech support does not answer their phones. I have never experienced that.

    Does anyone have a list of the actual cookie names? We are  working on this for GDPR compliance, and I'm finding things that appear to be act-on related - e.g., they begin with 'ao'  or they have our customer number embedded in the name. Unbelievable that with their whole GDPR hub, I can't seem to find anything that lists them in a 'cookie table' format. Any ideas? Thanks.

    My company would like to know the answers to these questions as well.  The user experience is dreadful using Act-On's opt-in with opt-out tracking option.  So awful that we are most likely going to implement a difference cookie tracking software and go back to the standard mode.

    Hi @Tatiana Lea

    There are possible solutions to controlling the cookie pop-up on websites that have the Act-On beacon on them. However, does Google Tag Manager control cookies on Act-On landing pages? This is the real issue many people in the Community are grappling with (as the default Act-On cookie pop-up is so poorly designed).

    @Noe Marti
    Thank you for posting your questions so:

    1. Purpose - the main purpose of Act-On beacon is to track your visitors/prospects behavior activity by placing a cookie on their browser.
    2. Type of cookie: Are they persistent or session based? Act-On Beacon to track behavior utilities persistent cookie.
    3. - Duration: How long does it remain before its automatically deleted? Stored for 12 months unless deleted/removed by the visitor/contact.

    @Teresa Jarvis

    I am wondering if you guys have Google Tab Manager, you can potentially manage popups with that tool or alternatively consider cookie consent tool that would manage all your cookies. I presume you do not only have Act-On beacon but also have other tracking  tools like Google Analytics, LinkedIn Ads etc? I found this article that explains how to change/control your cookies with Google Tag Manager.

    The Act-On Connect page Tracking and Cookies Overview appears to partially document the cookies.

    Manually comparing the "Opt-In with Opt-out" mode to the "Standard Mode" when my site loads, here is what I observed in the browser developer tools:

    Standard Mode sets:

    1. "wp12345" -- where "12345" is the account id -- is set for 1 year, attributed generically to your domain (e.g., ".example.com").

    Opt-In with Opt-Out sets:

    1. "ao_optin" is set for 1 year attributed to your "www" (e.g., "www.example.com")
    2. "ao_optin12345" -- where "12345" is the account id -- is set for 1 year, attributed to the subdomain you setup specifically for Act-On (e.g., "acton.example.com")
    3. "wp12345" -- where "12345" is the account id -- is set for 1 year, attributed generically to your domain (e.g., ".example.com").

    Guessing at "Purpose"

    • "ao_optin" appears to store whether or not the anonymous visitor has previously made an opt-in/-out decision.
    • "ao_optin12345" appears to store a visitor's unique tracking id if the visitor has opted in (affirmative).
    • "wp12345" appears to store the visitor's unique tracking id plus additional information since its value contains the same string as "ao_option12345" but with additional data.

    It would be extremely helpful if the "Tracking and Cookies Overview" page listed out all the cookies used by each mode with full detail.
