Google Tag Manager - Act-On Form Event

Kate Bluhm
Hello Everyone,

Has anyone set up a Form Submission event in GTM for Act-On forms that are embedded on your website or landing page? I am having trouble getting the event to fire and I know in the past GTM has been finicky with certain types of forms.

I can get the trigger to fire if it is set up as a 'click event' but not when it is a 'form submission' event and we have the click validation selected.  (we don't want it to fire simply when someone clicks the form button when they have not filled out the form itself).

Thank you,

Eric

When we first converted to Labs forms a few months ago I was not seeing gtm.click or gtm.formSubmit events.  With not a lot of time to debug the issue, we decided to use thank you pages and trigger our conversions on those pageviews rather than a form submit event.  But I created a new form today and using the GTM Preview Mode can see both of those events fire on form submit.  Could be that something changed in Labs Forms since that time (April) or in the page hosting the embedded form (Drupal 7 in our case).  But it seems to be working now.

I do recommend reading the 'why the form trigger doesn't always work' section of Simo Ahava's blog post about GTM and forms if you haven't already.

@Will Weidman - Are you still having success with GTM Form Auto-Event Listener? I've been battling with getting form data into GA for a few days (on and off, anyway) and I'm still not able to successfully get a Lab Form to trigger the event listener.

    Good morning, Will.

Thanks for the reply, the original was some time ago, so I wasn't sure if you still checked in here.

Unfortunately, when in Preview Mode, I cannot get the gtm.formSubmit trigger to fire. It sounds like you are firing the gtm.click trigger? My preference would be to use validation. I've reached out to support for insights, though I'm not optimistic they'll have any.

I'm currently, evaluating Zapier for integrating Act-On with GA. I'd rather not pay for another service, but since native functionality is not working it may be my only option. Especially given the need to fire Events > Goals for paid advertising campaigns.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

I dislike the idea of a thank you page. Why do on multiple pages what you should be able to do with one. I may just set up the gtm.formsubmit trigger and hope for the best!

    Hi.

Can I back track for one second. I have having the hardest time navigating ActOn in terms of setting up forms to fire in GA.

Every help link, does not help. The steps it shows, do not exist in our forms.

It seems the discussion here is about things not working, but it seems like you at least got to testing.

Here is what we have and what we want to have happen.

We create forms in Acton for external embedding on our website.

In these forms, we want the form completions to show up in GA.

Simply, how does this happen. Where is the connection? Where does Google code go? I find it hard that this is not easier to do.

An agency we are working with has no recommendations as they have never heard of ActOn.

If not possible, that's fine too, at least then I know and can find another way outside ActOn.

    Thanks for any help.

    @Michael Cusden,

This was one of the most frustrating things for me when I was trying to improve my site. It was critical for me to be able to trigger GA Conversions for optimizing/improving may paid ad campaigns. Fortunately, I finally found an Act-On support rep who was helpful (shout out Lauren Mulkern). Lauren didn't necessarily have all the answers, but she was able to point me in the right direction.

Back story aside, you'll need to fire GA Events using Google Tag Manager. Unfortunately, the pre-built Form Trigger doesn't work as is, you'll need to modify it to work. Here's my set up:

    Create a new 'Tag'
    1. Tag Type 'Google Analytics - Universal Analytics'
    2. Track Type: Event
    3. Category: form-submission (or whatever you prefer)
    4. Action: Page URL Variable
    5. Label/Value: You'll need to figure this one out.
      1. Most of my forms are the same so after the initial implementation, I was able to circle back and build user-defined variables based on the 'gtm.element.#.value' Data Layer Variable Name that GTM assigns to the fields, where # = the assigned GTM number.
      2. Since my forms mostly follow the same structure-First Name, Last Name, Company, Phone, etc.-I was able to assign, for example, 'gtm.element.0.value' to a new user-defined Variable I called 'Act-On Form Input - First'.
    6. Non-Interaction Hit: False
    7. Google Analytics Settings: whatever your base-GA variable is called.

    Add/Create your Act-On Form 'Trigger'

    1. Trigger Type: Form submission
    2. Wait for Tags: Unchecked
    3. Check Validation: Unchecked
    4. This Trigger Fires on: Some Forms
    5. Fire this trigger when an Event occurs and all of these conditions are true
      1. Page URL > Matches RegEx > .*
      2. Form ID > contains > ao-form
Please let me know if this is helpful. I struggle on-and-off for the better part of a month to solve this on my own and with Lauren. So hopefully it works for you and others.

    Thanks, Will.

I dislike the idea of a thank you page. Why do on multiple pages what you should be able to do with one. I may just set up the gtm.formsubmit trigger and hope for the best!

    Seth,

I am using the gtm.formSubmit event, but I was curious to see if you were getting any event data from the form.  When I was having issues with this originally I reverted to dedicated thank you pages and using those pageviews to fire Google Analytics goals.

    Seth,

I have continued to have success firing events on embedded Labs form submits using GTM's native listener.  When using GTM in preview mode, can  you at least see the gtm.click event when the button is clicked?

@Will Weidman - Are you still having success with GTM Form Auto-Event Listener? I've been battling with getting form data into GA for a few days (on and off, anyway) and I'm still not able to successfully get a Lab Form to trigger the event listener.

    Thank you,

My setup is similar.  I found that 'Check Validation: Unchecked' was important for getting the Google Tag Manager watcher to see the form submit.  Downside is that submits of forms with errors that don't pass the validation rules do get counted.  But, assuming most users fix the issue and re-submit the form correctly, as long as you look at unique events (or have the events mapped to goals which by definition are unique per session) you'll have pretty good data.

    @Michael Cusden,

Update. Got it working. Thanks @Seth Petersen. I would have never gotten there without your post. Support just kept telling me how to add Analytics to our website.

We are experiencing what @Will Weidman mentioned. It fires regardless if form is filled out properly or not and just submit button hit. Much closer than I was yesterday.

Debating on if I keep trying ActOn support until I get someone who has more to offer.

    Thanks again.

    @Michael Cusden,

Apologies, it looks like they've changed the branding. There are now just Forms (Lab Forms) and Classic Forms (the older type).

I think the easiest way to tell is:
    • (Lab) Forms - is a much more modern editor and opens in a new tab
    • Classic Forms - feels dated and opens the editor in a new, pop-up window.
