Field overwrite issues

    Hi Michael,

In Act-On you have maintenance programs. One of the options is Copy form another segment.

When you select this step the options are:
    • Append and merge records with matching email address - This Adds new records and fills blank fields in existing records from source
    • Merge records with matching email address - This Fills blank fields in existing records from source to any matching existing records in destination
    • Update records - Existing values will be overwritten with non-blank values from source
    • Remove records in destination if not present in source - Records not in the source will be removed from the destination
What you do is create a new list and create a maintenance program on this list. As step you select copy from segment and select Merge records with matching email address.

    What happens:
    • The first time you copy from the segment (being your form submission list) all blank values will be filled.
    • The second time the field lead source is filled and will not be overwritten with a new submission from the same emailaddress.
    • Only problem is that no already existing value will be overwritten
    • You can make this list only containing emailadress and lead source and call it the Lead Source List.
    Hope this helps.

    Hello,

We use multiple forms that share a common hidden field (Lead Source) to reflect what source a contact came from. When multiple forms are filled out by the same contact, the most recent value replaces the previous value.

E.g. contact fills out Form A and Form B. Form B would replace A, thereby erasing the true, original value (A).

Is there a way to keep a value static once it's been filled? If not, are there workarounds aside from creating multiple fields per value type?

The main goal is to ensure that fields are not constantly overwritten.

    Thank you

    Thanks, Marten.

AO support had a similar suggestion: a list maintenance program that copies from the source list to the destination list only if a contact is not already in the destination list. This would also prevent overwriting of null values.
