Beacon Tracking Mode Details

  • Updated

Act-On's Website Tracking Beacon can run in one of two cookie modes, and the one you pick affects both your visitors' experience and how much data comes back to you. The Beacon feeds Website Prospector, behavior segmentation and personalization, and website visit events on your Contact and Account Reports - so this setting has real downstream effects on your reporting.

Why this matters: If your organization is subject to the EU ePrivacy Directive, GDPR, CCPA, or an internal policy restricting visitor tracking, you must put a cookie opt-in flow in place before adding the Beacon to your web properties. Getting this wrong is a compliance risk, not just a data quality one.

User Experience

When using the Standard cookie mode, customers and prospects who visit your Act-On landing pages, forms, or any web pages containing the Act-On Beacon Tracker have the Act-On cookie placed on their browser.

For this reason, we highly recommend implementing a cookie opt-in message to manage the placement of the Act-On and other cookies. The Build a Custom Cookie Consent Banner for Your Website guide provides a simple way to customize your opt-in message and allow users to manage their opt-in status on your website.

For customers whose organizational policies place restrictions on the tracking of website visitors, or who are subject to the European Union ePrivacy Directive, GDPR, or CCPA related to tracking cookies, you must implement an opt-in flow before adding the beacon to your web properties.

Tracking Modes

You can set the tracking modes while setting up the Beacon, or at any time afterwards.

Standard Mode

This option provides the most complete set of website metrics by automatically saving tracking information about every prospect to your website. Your prospects' browsing experience will not be affected.

Which features and reports are available with this option?

  • Message responses are tracked in individual message reports, contact reports, & account reports
  • Anonymous landing page and form views
  • Anonymous website prospect traffic, if you choose to place the Act-On Beacon Tracker on your website

Disabled Mode

This account-wide setting does not cookie your visitors at all. Visitors will not be tracked, and all visitors will appear as “anonymous” in Website Prospector. This mode is not recommended unless you must comply with strict privacy regulations.
