Using Anchors in Emails - Legacy Composer

  • Updated

Anchors are destinations within your email that allow recipients to jump directly to a specific section. They are especially useful in longer messages, such as newsletters, where quick navigation improves the overall reading experience.

Quick Reference (Advanced Users) – Click to Expand
  • Create an anchor in a Rich Text block using the Anchor button.
  • Name the anchor using letters and numbers only (no spaces or symbols).
  • Link to the anchor by adding #anchorname in the URL field of the Link dialog.
  • Use anchors to build tables of contents or jump-to-section menus.
  • Test your anchors - some mobile apps and devices do not support them.
Try it like this: Add a short table of contents at the top of your email and use anchor links to jump readers to each section. This improves navigation in longer newsletters or content-heavy announcements.

Long-format content, such as newsletters, often benefits from using lists of links at the top of the message that send recipients directly to specific sections.

Anchor links are not supported by all browsers or devices. Mobile apps, in particular, may ignore anchor functionality. Always test your email in the environments your audience is most likely to use.

Instructions

Step 1: Add an Anchor

  1. Open the email where you want to add anchors. For example, navigate to Content > Email Templates, select a template, click Edit, and go to the Design tab.
  2. Hover over the Rich Text block where the anchor should be placed and click the Pencil icon to open the editor:

    • Unique
    • Made of letters and numbers only (no spaces or symbols)

  7. Click OK to close the editor, then click Save in the top-right corner of the email.

Step 2: Link to an Anchor

  1. In your email, select or open the Rich Text block where you want to add the link. Highlight the text that will function as the link and click the Link button.
  2. In the URL field, enter #anchorname — replacing anchorname with the anchor name you created:

If the anchor is within the same block, you may also select it using the Anchors dropdown menu (not shown here).
  3. Click Save, then save the email itself.
