All Contacts Upgrade Assistant: Copy Segments

  • Updated

You can easily copy your complete segment hierarchy from a Marketing List into the Audience Center All Contacts database using the Upgrade Assistant. This lets you keep your segmentation structure while moving fully to the new All Contacts environment.

Quick Reference (Advanced Users) - Click to Expand
  • Open the Upgrade Assistant from the lightbulb icon or the menu in All Contacts.
  • Select a parent segment in All Contacts for the copied hierarchy.
  • Select one or many Marketing List segments to copy.
  • Map any fields used in segment criteria that do not yet exist.
  • Optional: clean up your old segments or Marketing Lists afterward.
Try it like this: Choose “All Contacts” as the parent, copy your top lead qualification segments, map fields like Job Title or Industry if needed, then archive the original Marketing List segments after confirming the results.

Access the Upgrade Assistant

Open the Upgrade Assistant by selecting the lightbulb icon in the upper right of the All Contacts page.

From the Upgrade Assistant home screen, select Start copying segments.

If the lightbulb icon was dismissed, you can still access the Upgrade Assistant from the three dot menu in the upper right corner.

Select Parent

Choose the parent segment where your copied segments will be created. The default is All Contacts, but you may want a more specific parent such as “All Leads” or “Current Customers,” or any existing All Contacts segment.

Select Segments to Copy

Select the Marketing List segments you want to copy. Selecting a Marketing List selects all segments and subsegments beneath it. You can clear any segments that you do not want to recreate.

Helpful notes:

  • Selecting a Marketing List copies only segment criteria. It does not copy the contacts. To import contacts, use the import function.
  • Direct select segments cannot be copied. Only query-based or search-based segments can be replicated. To recreate a direct select segment, import it instead.
  • You can copy the same segments more than once to different parent segments.
  • You can select and copy segments from multiple Marketing Lists if their destination parent in All Contacts is the same.

Field Matching

If a segment uses criteria based on fields like Job Title or Region, those fields must exist in your All Contacts schema. Act-On automatically checks for matching field names and flags any that require clarification. You can map each field or create a new one.

Tip: If you create a new field and use a CRM sync, open Data Management afterward to map that new field to the correct CRM field so it will populate with data.

Clean Up

Before finalizing your copy, you can choose to clean up the original Marketing List segments. You may archive the list and its segments or delete unused segments. This improves performance and helps avoid confusion later about which segments have already been moved.

If you prefer to keep your Marketing Lists for now, select I don't want to do anything to these segments. You can archive or delete them manually later.

Review and Submit

Select Review to confirm the parent segment and the segments you selected. Once submitted, Act-On creates the copied segments in All Contacts.

To view results, reopen the Upgrade Assistant and choose Copy Segments. The segment copy log appears at the top of the page and includes an option to undo the copy if needed. Undoing removes the new segments from All Contacts.
